A manufacturer of industrial synthetic diamonds was struggling with poor quality of coatings on a tool where diamonds only grow on coated surface area. The coating was inconsistent causing lower yield than projected.
We went about seeking how to provide a more consistent coating for the application. We met with the process engineer and decided to test several different CVD coatings. We recommended CVD over PVD because the tool had to be 100% coated. The thicker CVD coating was designed to increase yield and provide more consistency of yield.
The customer was able to quote more aggressively and win more business having a better predictability in yield through the process. Also, they were able to get a better handle on the budget for coatings and all other process materials and time to achieve a certain output.
